In 2006, the Sonoma Valley Hospital Foundation inaugurated the Women's Health Initiative with a $100,000 endowment. The mission of the initiative was to build a program of services and resources to meet the health and wellness needs of the women of Sonoma Valley. Among it's many other projects, the Foundation has raised money for capital improvements to the Birth Center and to purchase both digital mammography and bone density equipment for the Women's Center at Sonoma Valley Hospital. The initiative was named for Carolyn J. Stone, foundation chair, as a tribute to her longtime service to the foundation. Since that time, with the support of SVH physicians, hospital administration and the community, the momentum for the Carolyn J. Stone Center for Women's Health & Wellness has grown and flourished.
In 2007, a committed group of Sonoma Valley women formed the Community Advisory Board (CAB) to plan and direct the vision for the Stone Women's Center. The CAB is composed of very talented women with diversified backgrounds who actively contribute much expertise and experience to the development of the Stone Women's Center. The CAB, lead by Chair, Karen Collins, are, and will continue to be, an integral part of the planning, design and implementation of the Center for Women's Health & Wellness programs.
The Carolyn J. Stone Center for Women's Health & Wellness is fully committed to transforming the health care delivery of services for women, into a focused, multi-disciplinary health care resource. With our educational collaboration with UCSF's Center of Excellence in Women's Health, this program will provide an example of the unique role a local hospital can play in partnering with the community to improve their health and welfare by providing a community health resource that supports, educates and ultimately empowers girls and women to make informed health decisions.
